Class Exercise B

Artpiece taken from :http://www.dontpaniconline.com/magazine/arts/top-ten-olympic-street-art-pieces

Response: This art piece is created by street artists amidst the 2012 London Olympics. On first glance, I personally think that this art piece is trying to convey a message. Various countries athletes are in a way "in war" and competing with each other in a peaceful resolution. Each country vying for the most amount of gold medals in the games tries to assert their superiority and pride in the olympic games.

Description – This art piece is actually painted on the wall in an alley in London. Not much fancy paintwork is being observed in the art piece which is why it conveys the message being held by commoners and the masses on how the olympic games is being viewed. Moreover, since the artpiece is displayed in public, it indicates how the artist wants to convey this message to the masses.

Analysis and interpretation – The artist makes use of a javelin thrower, a track and field event in the olympic games to convey his/her message. By making use of hurling "rockets", it conveys the idea that the individual representing its country is actually hurling the firepower rocket towards other countries, which denotes the idea of firepower involved in modern warfare.

Evaluation and Judgment  - Initially, the idea of hurling firepower connotes war amongst countries, competing for pride and glory in the peaceful way. But upon further analysis, it could also mean that athletes in the Olympic games might be exploited by their countries to actually help them represent their country and bringing pride to their country. Of course, this can only be analysed well enough if an individual knows the implications behind each and athlete's training regime, life and how he/she got into the sport. Did the country offer a monetary incentive to the poor and young to source for talents? Or did the athletes did it for pure passion that is developed overtime. This art piece can actually allow the appreciator to actually think of possible meanings behind the simple message of athletes vying with each other to bring pride and glory to his/her country. Different people might have difference in experience which mean that people might interpret the art piece very differently. For example, athlete might think of the artpiece otherwise, they might be so passionate about the sport and not thinking about such issue of war between countries.
